Context

According to UNDP (2019), Burundi ranks 185th out of 189 countries on the Human Development Index. Makamba and Rutana provinces are considered the country's granary. The regular political crises that lead to massive population movements, climate change, the population's difficult access to productive resources, the high rate of illiteracy ... all this leads to a decline in agricultural production and a lack of dynamism and economic opportunities.

Purpose

By 2026, 5.720 new jobs will be created, for women and youth, promoting an agroecological and environmentally friendly transition. The target sectors are agriculture, handicrafts serving agriculture and non-agricultural income-generating activities (IGA).

Why OVO believes in this project

Young people and women in particular are reaping the short-term benefits of the new jobs. But long term, the whole region benefits from the agro-ecological and environmentally friendly transition.

Social impact

Strengthening the agro-ecological transition will make it possible to increase producers' agricultural yields by 30%. Thanks to the project, the percentage of youth and women working in agricultural support occupations will have reached 60% and 40% respectively. An indirect impact is the increase in the number of women in decision-making bodies at the community level and an increase in their savings. These different elements have a direct influence on the improvement of their living conditions.
