Green entrepreneurship in Indonesia

Agriculture is of vital importance in Merangin, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra: 45% of the population derives its income from it. At the same time, agriculture is the biggest threat to the unique biodiversity in the region: Every day a piece of forest the size of a football pitch disappears.

Payments for ecosystem services provide higher income and better nature management in Indonesia
GOAL

Rikolto experiments together with 184 coffee farmers with models for the payment of ecosystem services. Coffee farmers receive rewards for applying sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to the preservation of their living environment and prevent deforestation. These financial or other contributions are made by government partners or private actors who also benefit from the preservation of ecosystems. Thanks to these models, biodiversity and agriculture can go hand in hand.
