Better drinking water systems increase development opportunities in Congo

The Ituri province in the mountainous northeast of DR Congo is a fertile region with a mild climate and a relatively high population density. The ‘urban’ centers of Bunia (the largest city), Djugu and Mahagi still have a strong rural character. Electricity and running water are the exception, not the norm. Many families live in the countryside and are often isolated due to a lack of roads and vehicles. They are almost completely dependent on their own farming crops. Compromised hygiene and the lack of sanitary facilities in combination with contaminated drinking water are still the prime causes of disease and diarrhea.

SOCIAL IMPACT

This project aims to give 28,000 additional people improved access to drinking water by expanding existing drinking water systems (new pipelines). The water distribution points will be converted into water kiosks that are professionally managed by small, private service providers. A school of 800 pupils will receive sanitary facilities. Lessons will also include a lot of information on the importance of hygiene and the sustainable use of water.
