DESEC-OO: a healthier solution for household fuel thanks to vegetable waste

The company
In 2020, Filip Maenhout, a Belgian who has been living in Cameroon for years, founded DESEC-OO. Short for "Development Social Enterprise Cameroon - Organic Output". The goal: to produce ecological charcoal ("biochar") from organic waste. That way, households have access to a healthy household fuel.

Biochar is produced in Bertoua and sold in northern Cameroon.

The business project

DESEC-OO wants to convert biodegradable vegetable waste into biochar. Therefore, the company wants to purchase 6 ovens, each capable of producing up to 250 kg of biochar daily. In 3 years, DESEC-OO wants to produce 400 tons annually.

After production, the biochar will be dried, formed into briquettes and packaged in paper bags.

This should generate an annual turnover of €102,000 and create 15 to 20 jobs.

Why OVO believes in this project

DESEC-OO not only meets numerous SDGs, it also has other assets. It’s a well thought out project, the management team

Is very experienced and there is a high demand for biochar. Moreover, the project reconciles profitability with social

impact and environmental care.

Investment Requested

DESEC-OO seeks a loan of €10,000 at 7% for the purchase of basic equipment and the first oven. OVO also wants to finance – under certain conditions - the five following ovens (€5,000 each). The repayment is spread over a period of 3 years, with a first payment after 18 months.

The Cameroonian government supports projects such as DESEC-OO: it combats illegal logging and desertification and at the same time makes up for the shortage of fuel for domestic use.
