Investments in water and soil ensure better living conditions in Haiti

The project in Haiti is being implemented in two river basins: Onde Verte in the municipal area of Belladère (in the center) and Moustiques close to Port de Paix (in the northwest). The association of users for irrigation and drinking water, the management committees for the river basins, local authorities, regional service departments and research bodies in Haiti and Belgium are working together on this project. Local partners are also involved in this project. In Moustiques it is ODRINO and the river basin committee, and in Onde Verte it is ITECA.

PURPOSE

By better management and more efficient use of the two river basins, Protos wants to ensure that the local farmers can produce more and increase their income. This project also provides access to drinking water for the people and includes specific measures to protect them against the erosion of fertile soil and floods. The ultimate aim is to bring about structural improvement in local living conditions.

SOCIAL IMPACT

Protecting water sources and river basins is an ongoing intervention that benefits residents. Among other things, it has a positive impact on their health. This project will give an additional 3,500 people access to potable water and an additional 593 farmers access to irrigation water for their fields. Special attention is paid to vulnerable women. The 40,000 residents of Moustiques and the 55,000 residents of Onde Verte benefit indirectly from the improved water and soil management practices and better protection of the river basins.
